Benjamin Cho Goes Gaga

ben cho lady gaga

Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance video was just released yesterday, and already Chic Report has seen it more times than we care to admit. And though we swooned over the McQueen spring 2010 hoofs and heels and Carrera’s Champion sunglasses, there was one other Gaga look that we couldn’t get enough of: the bear head rug coat, courtesy of Benjamin Cho. The coat is from Cho’s spring 2004 runway show with the Humane Society of the United States–it’s 100% faux fur and animal cruelty free–and was reworked specifically for Lady Gaga for the video. It’s been a great week for the darling Prabal Gurung. Last Wednesday, Demi Moore sported one of his feminine frocks to GQ’s Gentlemen’s Ball. On Monday night, Leighton Meester picked up a blue-hued take for the Library Lions Gala. And last night, Thandie Newton wore a strapless version to the L.A. premiere of 2012. Chic Report loves you!

Post-Paris Fashion Week, the world was abuzz that cats would be the next big thing. Miuccia Prada put them all over her Miu Miu runway, and Vanessa Seward was inspired by her own pet, Monsieur Jo, for her Azzaro collection. Fresh from Chic Report’s inbox, we give you a shot from L.A.-based designer Cory Lynn Calter’s spring 2010 lookbook–including several pieces featuring the feline friends. We’re getting burned out on this trend before it even happens–but what do you think, darlings?

Black Is The New Black?

v blackface

Following Lara Stone’s controversial turn in French Vogue and a recent episode of America’s Next Top Model, it seems that blackface is a veritable (if unlikely) trend. Mario Sorrenti photographed Sasha Pivovarova and Heidi Mount in this shot for the latest issue of V, which hits newsstands November 3. James Kaliardos made up the lovely ladies–and we’re sure the image will have as many fans as it does detractors. What say you, chicsters?

Mariah Gets Her Calvin on

francisco costa mariah carey oi fashion rocks

Well, not literally. Mariah Carey may not have actually been sporting Calvin Klein Collection (not body-con enough for you, Mimi?), but the diva showed her support of Francisco Costa and Co. in Brazil this weekend at the first-ever Oi Fashion Rocks event in Rio De Janeiro. Carey belted the tunes while Costa showed his Fall 2009 collection on stage–before he took the stage for himself for a bow and a little rock star treatment of his own.

Will Tom Ford Attend the Oscars as a Nominee?

TomFordLondon

Tom Ford hosted yet another screening of A Single Man during the Times BFI 53rd London Film Festival in London and all early reviews point to the same exciting conclusion…the designer might, in fact, land at the Kodak Theater come Oscar time as a nominee. This confirms what countless blogs and sites have been chatting about for months; Ford can very well become the very first Oscar winner with his own CFDA statue. Sure, this is ambitious, but so is Ford’s career path. And has any designer even come this close to Hollywood feature film glory? His competition is surely stiff. Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker), Lee Daniels, (Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire), and Jason Reitman, (Up in the Air) are almost assured nods in this early stage of the game. That leaves two spots up for grabs. And Ford will have to beat the likes of Clint Eastwood, Rob Marshall, James Cameron, the Coen brothers, and Peter Jackson to score the historic nod. If he fails to do so in January, the film can still be nominated for Best Picture. It’s an easier task this year since 10 slots are available in the top category. And Colin Firth already looks like a shoo-in Best Actor contender. Whatever the outcome, one thing is for sure: Ford will be outfitting a LOT of actors this awards season.

Envelope, Please: This Season’s Top 15 Collections!

15Spring2010

After absorbing and living through hundreds of shows in four very self-important cities, Chic Report set out to pick The Daily’s very best–while our brains are still programmed to dissect collections and inspiration sheets. In a very scientific process, we’ve asked all our editorial staffers here to rank their top 15 collections, and assigned a point value to each placement. We’ve come up with the list of the very best–and five honorable mention efforts that just missed the cut.

1. Marc Jacobs: Jury is still out on Vuitton, but Marc’s eponymous line hit a brilliant mark, offering both concept (the theater!) and a covetable array of pieces. Wash off that kabuki makeup, and you’ve still got classic Jacobs–dressed up with spot-on spring themes like ruffles, lingerie, and sheers. Punctual and phenomenal!

2. Prada: Fashion’s smart girl, Miuccia Prada, is guaranteed to keep Prada-philes guessing each season up until that last look struts out. After a heavy fall, she took a lighter turn for spring, offering sure-to-be-waitlisted lucite accessories, a perfect shiny red lip, and a bright, sparkling array of ready-to-wear. Bring on the summer!

3. Lanvin: Alber Elbaz strikes again! The veritable king of Parisian luxury, Elbaz offered an exuberant collection of masterfully draped and embellished looks. His technical genius is clear…but the bottom line is that these are clothes that women want to wear. Those lucky enough to see it live are still trembling with joy.

4. Emilio Pucci:  Step aside, Christophe Decarnin. There’s a new star for all that is glamorous and sexy, no dowdy prints required. Peter Dundas has injected life back into the label, earning fans like Carine in the process with his micro-minis and sexy accessories.

5. Stella McCartney:  There’s a reason Natalia Vodianova looks so happy. Stella McCartney went unabashedly flirty for spring, offering not only her much-beloved brand of blazers, but adorably flounced, girlish dresses. We’ll take one! (more…)
